Yesterday was 137 years since the première of Das Rheingold, Anna Tomowa-Sintow’s 65th birthday, and my 22nd. Among my presents — an immense purple suitcase, The Rough Guide to Sydney and a year’s membership of the Friends of Opera Australia. For the third time this year, yes, I’m going to Sydney. The difference is that this time I’m not coming back.
Sydney felt like home from day one, but moving was such an impossibility then that it didn’t even occur to me. All that’s changed now and so I’m free to go forth and live in this gorgeous city that I adore. I leave in about two weeks, arriving just in time for Opera Australia’s 50th Anniversary Gala— which features a certain Australian soprano without whom I’d never have visited Sydney in the first place.
